In April 2008 Minister John Gormley launched the Green Paper on Local Government Reform entitled "Stronger Local Democracy - Options for Change". This green paper addressed a number of of local government which will directly impact councillors and the way in which they work

Having had the opportunity to speak frequently with councillors during my election campaign I became aware of many of the issues and the challenges you face on a day to day basis in fulfilling your duties. Therefore, I felt there were certain measures and initiatives which could be implemented to better enable councillors to service their constituents.

To coincide with publication this paper Senator Jim Walsh and I conducted a joint national survey of all Councillors in Ireland to solicit their views on the proposed areas of reform. To view the survey please click here.

We received a response rate of nearly 35%, and the responses were both revealing and informative. We are currently in the process of analyzing the responses and tabulating the results which will form the basis of a joint submission we will make to the Minister of Environment and Local Government on behalf of councillors. We hope to use this submission, which is based on a very comprehensive survey, to lobby successfully for the inclusion of councillors views and the provision of better resources for councillors in the future. The results of the survey and a draft of the submission will be available on the website soon.
