Political Activities

2007 - 2006  National Forum on Europe, Co-ordinator Munster Region.
2005 - 2006 Special assistant to Brian Crowley MEP, organized and coordinated a series of constituency tours.
2004 Brian Crowley’s MEP Elected on the first count in the South Constituency, Mark was part of the
Re-Election Committee, and involved in coordinating canvassing within the South Constituency.
2004 Campaign Worker on Dan McCarthy’s County Council Election Eliminated on the last 6th count
with a first preference of 904
1999 Member of Brian Crowley’s MEP Re-Election Committee, involved in coordinating canvassing
activities and meetings within the Munster Constituency. Again Brian was elected on the first
count with 154,195 first preferences and 1.72 of a quota
1999 Campaign Worker on Dan McCarthy’s County council election, Dan was Vice-chairman of the
Kenmare GAA club when Mark was Chairman. Dan was close to being the first Fianna Fail
Councillor elected out of Kenmare since the 1930’s.
1994 - 1992 Chairman of South Kerry Ogra Fianna Fail
1994 - 1991 Chairman of the Kenmare Ogra Fianna Fail Cumann which organized debates, trip to FF 1916
Commemoration in Arbour Hill, lobbying local representatives and ministers on behalf of
Community projects.  
1994 Campaign Worker on Brian Crowley’s European Election Campaign Brian was elected on the
First count with 84,463 first preferences and 1.16 of a quota
1993 - 1991 Chairman of Bolton St Cumann. Activities included scheduling guest speakers to address the
student body, recruitment of new members and founding the Political Society with members of
other political parties to promote political awareness among students.
1993 - 1991 Editor of four editions of a college political magazine involving interviews with Bertie Ahern as
Minister for Finance and Albert Reynolds as Taoiseach.
Organiser of the 1916 Rising Commemoration on the 75th Anniversary.
1991 - 2007 Member of Kenmare Fianna Fail Cumann
Media Experience

2008 - 2007 Presenter in RTE Cork new 16 part Home Salvage programme. Featuring properties from all over Ireland where the owners are helped to incorporate salvaged materials in their homes.

2007 - 2004 Presenter of the Radio Kerry “Kerry Property Show” Coordinated collation of information from all offices in the county, researched topics for show and liaised with producer regarding the format of the shows.

2004 - Co Presenter of RTE “Holiday Home Detectives” Travelled to seven European countries, liaised with local property experts to compile market information and prepared script for the production.

2003 - Hosted the Book Launch of “I am of Kerry” in aid of the Kerry Rape Crisis Centre.

2002 - Member of the cast of the Reality TV programme “Treasure Island”.  Selected as a cast member from over 38,000 applicants and reached the penultimate stage of the competition, finishing third overall. Making the front cover of the RTE Guide at the time.

2002 - 1999 Presenter of “What it says in the Papers” on Radio Kerry’s morning programmes “Kerry Today”. Reviewing front page stories and current events from national papers and scripting of material for the show. 

2001 – 2002 Journalist for the Kingdom newspaper, weekly submissions of up to seven articles of local interest to the editor regarding a wide range of issues.  


Voluntary Positions Held

2007 – 2005 President of the Great Famine Memorial Committee
Established to commemorate the 160th anniversary of the worst year of the Great Famine 1845 – 1850. In acknowledging the countless millions of Irish who died, the committee wish to generate awareness of the plight of the starving in our world today. Chairman is Steve Piezencik author, advisor to Henry Kissinger and hostage negotiator.   www.stevepieczenik.com  

2007 – 2002 Founder of the Wall of Ireland
Linking the ideas of those who financed the erection of the Statue of Liberty and the artistry of the Chicago Tribune Herald, the building of the wall raises money for the promotion of sports locally. www.wallofireland.com

2007 – 2004 Chairman of the Kenmare Community Employment Scheme
The Community Employment Scheme is designed to reskill and retrain the long term unemployed and has been very successful locally in achieving its aim of finding work for its participants. The scheme has also been instrumental in Kenmare’s recent victories in the Tidy Towns Competition.

2005 - 1999 Chairman of the Kenmare Hurling and Football Club
During my time as Chairman, the club constructed a 7,200 sq ft multi facetted sports facility. I coordinated the planning, funding and construction of a 32,000 sq ft all weather synthetic grass pitch. www.kerrygaelicsportscentre.com. The club’s income increased during my term of office from €21,000 to €73,000 per annum. Previously held the position of vice chairman and public relations officer.

2003 – 1999 Chief Executive of the All-Ireland Ladies 7 a side Gaelic Football Tournament.
Responsible for the overall planning of the event, secured sponsorship, coordinated dozens of volunteers and hundreds of competitors, formulated the timetable for games and supervised the entertainment for participants.
