Senator Daly responding to Senator Crown from the Independent group, said “It is disturbing that no report was done and this is being used as a political tool to justify a political decision, with the justification only produced later.” Senator Daly noted that “we look forward to the debate proposed by Senator Leyden in that regard” calling the Leader to facilitate a debate in the near future on organ donation. Highlighting current proposals, Senator Daly pointed out that “the programme for Government discusses presumed consent and I do not know if those opposite who voted for the programme realise what that means. It means the State has the right to take a person’s organs, whether the family agrees to the procedure or not.” “One may opt out but most do not. It is a system that does not work, although it has been tried everywhere. In the last consultation by the Department, of the 28 bodies involved in organ donation, 27 did not want the policy.” Senator Daly reiterated the call on the Leader to organise a debate on organ donation and presumed consent opt-out, saying “The State is basically taking people’s organs without permission, which is not a positive step in any society. It has been proven that where the system was in place in other countries, it did not work. A system of organ donor co-ordination works better.”
