Press release

Senator Daly Leads Cross Party Support for Kerry Pharmacists

(31st January 2008 11am) Speaking today in the Seanad, Senator Mark Daly called for a debate on the actions of the HSE towards the pharmacists. Senator Daly said that he believes this saga “flies in the face of the government policy of consensus building in disputes and of Fianna Fail’s belief in social partnership”. Daly has asked for a special debate on the matter after receiving distressed calls from Kerry pharmacists who have been issued new contracts by the HSE before an independent mediation has taken place.

Daly questioned why the HSE is ploughing ahead with the interim contracts for pharmacists on the 1st of March when they have not been directed by the Minister to do so?

Senator Daly contends that the HSE is deliberately ignoring instructions from government and the Minister for Health for an independent review of healthcare workers pay.

He continued on to say that the service provided by pharmacists in Kerry is vital and that he would continue to support them in the face of the HSE’s agenda to rush through pay agreements before an impartial review takes place. “The HSE is not a law onto itself and must wait until an Independent Body has heard and evaluated the arguments from all sides and has made its recommendations”, Daly concluded.

Senator Daly’s call for a debate had cross party support with Senators Ned Sullivan, Paul Coghlan and John Paul Phelan echoing his concerns.
