Kerry Senator Mark Daly has called for the for the proposed airport departure tax to be the same for all Irish airports, to avoid the country’s western airports, such as Farranfore, being put at a disadvantage. Following the Budget all departures from Irish airports will now be subject to a tax of €10 for general flights and a lower rate of €2 for shorter air journeys under the distance of 300 kilometres. “This is putting the airports on the west coast at a severe competition disadvantage,” said Senator Daly. “It effectively means that the only airport that you can fly to from Farranfore and not pay the €10 fee is Dublin. Whereas in the case of Dublin Airport, 15 different routes throughout Ireland and the UK will be subject to the lower tax fee.” “I think this is unfair on the airports on the west coast of Ireland such as Kerry Airport and others. Surely it would be possible to implement a system that is more balanced. It would be a lot fairer if all we simply introduced a rule that all departures from Ireland to certain airports are subject to the lower tax fee and then all other routes have to pay the €10 fee.” “I think this current situation gives Dublin Airport an unfair, competitive advantage and I will be outlining my view to the Minister for Transport and the Minister for Finance on this issue,” Senator Daly concluded.
