KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL CAN SPEND MONEY ON ROADS IMMEDITATELY

Senator Mark Daly has today, Tuesday 9th February, welcomed the announcement that Kerry County Council can spend money on Kerry roads immediately. The recent period of bad weather has taken a huge toll on our roads, especially many of our local and regional roads.

Senator Daly stated that local authorities should prioritise works on roads and should be aware that can spend up to 25% of last year’s road allocations immediately under pre-existing grants.

Senator Daly has also made clear that the Department of Transport provides grants to supplement road expenditure by local authorities, noting that some local authorities contribute as little as 5% to their total road expenditure from their own resources.

Local authorities will be allowed flexibility to revise their 2010 Restoration Improvement Programme with any revisions being forwarded to the National Roads Authority as a matter of urgency.
