Senator Mark Daly who was due to be on board the ship that was attacked last night but was prevented from leaving Cyprus by Cypriot authorities on Friday and Saturday, drew analogies with the aftermath of ‘Bloody Sunday 1972’ incident in Derry in which 13 innocent civilians were murdered. Security forces at the time claimed they were attacked and fired upon , all these claims proved to be false The Senator has condemned Israel’s reaction to their attack on the Humanitarian Mission (dubbed the ‘Freedom Flotilla’) as a “disinformation offensive after the attack and killing of innocent civilians in the early hours of Monday morning”. The Fianna Fáil Senator from Kerry is insisting that “Israel’s government's disinformation campaign is aimed at trying to make their violation of human rights, international law and basic human morality acceptable. This campaign smears the names of people who set out to alleviate the suffering of the people of Gaza. I was one of those who was supposed to be on that ship along with my colleagues Deputy Andrews and Deputy O’Snodaigh and I can assure you our mission was merely to lend support to the people of Gaza who are denied supplies as basic as cement and pencils .” “Israel does not make herself any friends in the world by behaving like this and merely escalates the level of distrust in the region not to mention that violence begets violence. Their actions were deplorable and their spin campaign is appalling.” On Tuesday evening Fianna Fail party members will be raising the attack on the flotilla at the government party's weekly meeting and the cross party Dail and Senate Palestinian Group will meet on Wednesday to discuss how it will respond to these actions by Israel. "I will be urging the government to insist to the international community that the truth will be found and that we will not accept these Israeli untruths. The line that the Israeli government is taking is ‘if we can’t convince them we will confuse them’. We in the wider world must strive to find the truth. In Ireland we saw the chain of violence that was triggered by the Bloody Sunday massacre which has taken nearly forty years to be resolved. After Bloody Sunday we saw security forces vilifying the protesters and claiming that paratroopers were fired upon by the civil rights marchers. Yet we know that 13 innocent people died that day. Our experiences in Ireland should make us aware of the importance of peace and we should urge the international community to do whatever it can to force all people to sit down and talk with a view to finding a peaceful solution to the problems in the region.'
