Deputy Chris Andrews, Senator Mark Daly and Deputy Aengus O'Snodaigh call for a meeting of EU Foreign Ministers in Response to the killing of Volunteers on the Gaza Aid Flotilla

Deputy Chris Andrews, Senator Mark Daly and Deputy Aengus O'Snodaigh have called for the convening of a meeting of all EU foreign ministers following the storming of a humanitarian aid ship to Gaza in international waters by Israeli forces in which up to 19 people were killed and dozens wounded.  The ship was part of an aid convoy which includes an Irish owned vessel, the MV Rachel Corrie, and twelve Irish passport holders. Deputies Andrews and O'Snodaigh and Senator Daly were refused access to one of the ships bound for Gaza by Cypriot authorities on Saturday.

The Oireachtas members called for an emergency meeting of the Oireachtas Foreign Affairs Committee to be held and this meeting will be held on Thursday June 3rd. The Israeli ambassador to Ireland, Dr. Zion Evrony, has confirmed his attendance.  The Oireachtas members have called for the convening of an emergency meeting of EU foreign ministers to discuss the application of Article 2 of the EU Israel Association Agreement  which provides that relations will be based upon respect for human rights. The matter will also be discussed by the Fíanna Fáil parliamentary party at a meeting tomorrow.

Deputy Chris Andrews has said, "This attack is totally unacceptable and disproportionate. I welcome the comments by Minister Michael Martin in relation to these actions, however it is critical that Israel face real sanctions for this latest atrocity."

'We are calling for an urgent meeting of all EU foreign ministers to discuss appropriate courses of action in response to  Israel's complete disregard for the safety of our citizens and their defiance of international law.  The events of the past day are a troubling and sinister development and we are of the view that immediate action needs to be taken both at domestic and international level.'
