HSE Community dietitians across Cork and Kerry will be running a series of free group education programmes for all people with type 2 diabetes in various locations over the coming months. The X-PERT programme is a FREE six-week (2½ hours a week) diabetes group education programme. The aim of the XPERT diabetes programme is to educate people affected by type 2 diabetes and improve their awareness about the most current treatment so that they can best manage their condition. Improving patient’s health and increasing patient’s control over their illness is a key element of this interactive programme. Maeve Carmody, HSE Senior Community Dietitian said, “The motivation for these education programmes is due to the prevalence of type 2 diabetes which has increased globally in recent years. This is a cause of concern for health care professionals. The HSE’s Community Dietitians hope that by providing and supporting patients with the knowledge, skills and confidence to self-manage their condition, their health will improve and it will be a win-win situation for all”. People may be unsure about attending a group session but feedback to date from those who attended previous programmes has been extremely positive. Programmes will take place in a number of areas including Killarney, Dingle, Farranfore, Cork city, Bandon, Skibbereen, Dunmanway, Mallow, Charleville and Midleton over the coming months. Further programmes will take place in many other locations throughout Cork & Kerry during 2012. If you are interested in attending a free XPERT Diabetes Education Programme, please contact the Health Promotion Department in Cork at 021 4921641 or Kerry at 064 6670763 (Mon to Fri – 9am – 5pm).
