Fianna Fáil Foreign Affairs Spokesman Seán Ó Fearghaíl has urged Irish citizens in countries across to the world to examine the option of applying for a Certificate of Irish Heritage.  www.heritagecertificate.ie is now live and applications will be accepted from tomorrow (September 30th).

Deputy Ó Fearghaíl said: “The Certificate of Irish Heritage was announced by Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin when he was Minister for Foreign Affairs and presided over the first Global Irish Economic Forum at Farmleigh in 2009.  It was one of the initiatives that was highlighting as having potentially huge interest to up to 70 million people of Irish descent around the world who do not qualify for citizenship.

“For decades Irish people have left our shores and made great contributions as emigrants to countries such as America, Canada, Australia and others.  And their descendants continue to do so today.  The Certificate of Heritage is official recognition from the Irish Government of people who are proud of their Irish heritage.  The pride of the Irish can be seen the world over through the annual St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and other culture events that take place in cities around the world every year that are uniquely Irish.

“Ireland is currently embarking on an important effort to harness the goodwill and heritage link to establish greater economic and cultural development here at home and among Irish communities around the world.

“Applications for a Certificate of Irish Heritage can be made after September 30th at
