Claim of Security Threat to Valentia by Senior Management of the
Irish Coastguard Ridiculous- Senator Mark Daly

(8th May 12pm) Speaking in the Seanad today Senator Mark Daly has said that “claims of a security threat to Valentia by Senior Management of the Irish Coastguard beggar belief”. Daly revealed the new excuse in a long list of fabricated reasons to close Valentia Marine Rescue Centre- the threat of terrorism.  Daly has called on the Senior Management of the Irish Coastguard to follow up on the claim and bring their concerns to the Minister for Defence and the Minister for Transport if they genuinely believe there is a threat.

Senator Daly has highlighted this “flippant excuse” given at a meeting on the 29th April between the local community and Senior Management as another example of the Senior Management’s determination to close Valentia.

Leader of the Seanad Senator Donnie Cassidy supported Senator Daly’s argument and said that most members of the Seanad support the retention of services in Valentia Marine Rescue Centre.

Daly has said that he looks forward to the Senior Management coming before the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport to substantiate these claims.
