Kerry Fianna Fáil Senator Mark Daly has called on all Kerry residents to become organ donors and to get a donor card. Senator Daly was speaking during a Seanad debate on the subject of organ donation. Also during the course of the debate the Government announced that they are to shortly bring forward legislation covering this issue in the near future to be entitled the Human Tissue Bill. “I know the number of organ donations in the country must definitely increase and would like to consider the various ways this can be achieved,” Daly said. “I believe everyone should carry an organ donor card and would encourage all the people of this country to carry one or sign the back of their drivers license.” The Bill will regulate the removal, retention, storage, use and disposal of human tissue from deceased persons and consent for the use of donated tissue from both living and deceased persons for the purpose of transplantation and research. Recently there had been some discussion about the introduction of presumed organ donation or opt out organ donations. However Senator Daly spoke out against this idea. “One of the criticisms of presumed consent is the impression it is part of the nanny state operation in that it takes the right of the person to consider. To assume someone would do this belittles the act and takes for granted what a miracle organ donation is.” “It may be far more effective to encourage the discussion of organ donation with families and loved ones to normalise the process for everyone involved. Public awareness campaigns and facilitation of discussion in schools, colleges and work places could have the same effect as introducing presumed consent.” Senator Daly also spoke about the great success Kerry had enjoyed in organ donation. “It is somewhat encouraging to note there were nine times more organ donations in Kerry General Hospital than in a major hospital in Cork. 18 people’s lives were transformed forever by the actions of the Kerry Hospital. It is the staff in the hospital who took the initiative, went to the families and looked for organs from the grieving families.”
