Tuesday 04 August 2009 Proposed Requirement of Planning Permission for Private Woodland Roads Would Be Detrimental to Foresters and Farmers, Warns Senator Mark Daly The Planning and Development Bill 2009 poses the introduction of a requirement of planning permission to create access from privately owned roads, serving forestry and woodland areas, onto public roadways. Such a move, states Senator Daly, would burden foresters and farmers alike, contrary to the Common Agricultural Policy. The Senator will be raising the issue with Minister for Environment, Heritage and Local Government, John Gormley, T.D.. Under section four of the current 2004 Act, such development is exempt from requiring planning permission. Senator Daly warns that the proposed removal of this exemption would be detrimental and costly to foresters and farmers, particularly in the current economic climate, troubling those already hard-hit. The Senator further cautions that such a measure would hinder the Common Agricultural Policy’s prerogative of developing and diversifying the forestry and agriculture industries. Senator Daly has raised this matter in the Seanad and will bring the issue to Minister Gormley’s attention. ENDS For further information, contact Mark on 086 8032816
