Senator Mark Daly Announces the Decision to Grant the Contract for the New 40 Bed Kenmare Hospital Contract.  The announcement today (Monday 18th October) by the Kerry Fianna Fáil Senator comes after months of tireless work.  Una Clinton, spokesperson for the Friends of Kenmare Hospital Group said "This is a great day for the Hospital Action Group and the people of the area. We have been waiting 36 years for this new hospital, we have been disappointed many many times and now it looks in sight. We would like to thank Senator Daly for his continuous work on behalf of the people of the area."  On the 8th of December 2009 an Taoiseach Brian Cowen wrote to the Senator stating that:  "I write to you in relation to Kenmare Hospital and having spoken to Mary Harney T.D. I wish to confirm that this project will go to design and planning early next year. Construction will also commence in 2010 and the project is scheduled for completion in 2011."  Senator Daly said "Too often we have had announcements on the hospital: 1976; 1997; 2002; 2007; 2008 - this time I was determined that it would be different." "Since an Taoiseach’s letter to me on the 8th of December 2009 I have worked closely with Una O Neill, the Friends of Kenmare Hospital Action Group and John Browner of HSE Estates to ensure progress.  The HSE project team were assembled in March. This team put together the design and accommodation brief for the proposed hospital.  On the 15th of April Minister for Health Mary Harney met with Senator Mark Daly to review and discuss progress. Senator Daly explains that "On that occasion I emphasised that the new hospital was vital to the people of the area. With increasing standards a new facility is vital."  The Kenmare Hospital tenders were issued by 4 competing contractors: JJ Rattigans; BAM Contractors; Western Building Services; and Glenbeigh Construction on the 2nd of July.  Senator Daly was the only public representative to meet with the HSE Estates team and the 4 potential contractors at the Hospital on the 21st of July to discuss the specific issues relating to the site.  Originally the tenders were due to be returned to HSE Estates in Dublin on the 7th of September but this was extended by 2 weeks to the 21st of September.  The HSE team then evaluated the 4 proposed prices and designs. The decision to grant the contract to Glenbeigh Construction was made by the HSE on Friday the 16th of October.  The letter informing the winning tenderer was issued on Monday the 18th of October.  Senator Daly said that "From my discussions with John Dolan and Glenbeigh Construction I am confident that this project will create 70 jobs when in full construction phase. Glenbeigh Construction has assured me that they will source most of the work force locally".  Mr John Dolan the General Manager of Glenbeigh Construction confirmed that he would honour his commitment to Senator Daly that he would meet with all the staff of the Hospital and others to get their views and thoughts on the design for the Hospital. The Senator will be arranging this meeting at a time and date convenient to all concerned.
