PRESS RELEASE November 10th 2011 CORK SEXUAL ABUSE SURVIVORS SEEK SUPPORT TO MAKE COMPLAINTS TO THE GARDAI
Making a complaint of sexual abuse to the Gardai can be one of the most daunting experiences in a person’s life. Sexual abuse survivors in the Cork area have been contacting One in Four’s Advocacy Service for support in contacting the Gardai, reporting child protection concerns to the HSE and commencing civil actions against their abusers.
Carraig na Bhearr School is currently the subject of a Garda and HSE Inquiry and some past pupils have been in touch with One in Four seeking practical information and support.
Executive Director Maeve Lewis says: “People who are thinking about telling their abuse history to the Gardai are often very nervous and concerned about the possible impact on their lives now and on their families. Anybody in this position needs clear information about their options if they are to make an informed choice. Our experienced Advocacy Officers can help people through this process in a confidential setting”.
One in Four Advocacy Officers will be in Cork on November 17th for private consultations and welcome inquiries particularly from past pupils of Carraig na Bhearr. An appointment can be made by phoning 01 6624070
