At 2:00 p.m on Tuesday November 15 2011, the proceedings of Dail Éireann aired live on Irish television, allowing citizens to scrutinize the inner workings of the Oireachtas from the comfort of their own homes. Business of the Oireachtas will air on channel 801 on the UPC Network as part of a trial initiative for a six month period. This trial initiative is being provided at NIL cost to the Exchequer.

As part of the Government’s agreement with UPC, coverage of Dáil Éireann will be carried live from 2.00 p.m on Tuesdays until close of business on Thursdays. Coverage of sittings of Seanad Éireann and Committees will be then broadcast from Thursday evening until 2.00 p.m the following Tuesday.

The launch today is the culmination of many months work in the planning and developmental phases of this project. Particular thanks to Dana Strong, Chief Executive Officer of UPC and her team who were innovative in their approach and have proven their commitment to this project from the start. Both the prospect and possibilities of this project are very exciting and it is hoped that the public will use this facility to follow the work of the Houses of the Oireachtas.  In time, it is hoped that this service can be rolled out by the other TV providers so that all the citizens of Ireland can have universal access to watch and listen to their National Parliament.  As this is a pilot, the public will be invited to give their views and feedback.  The public are encouraged to e-mail their ideas to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
