Organ Donation Opt-in Tick Box Campaign Print E-mail

The UK currently have donor registry system which requires individuals to tick a box on their motor tax renewal form. This information is stored in a database which is accessible by hospitals nationwide. This system is simple and effective and is the first step in establishing a working database in Ireland.

Launch of the Campaign

This campaign was launched by Senator Daly, Tanaiste Mary Coughlan and Ógra Fianna Fáil at the 2009 Ard Fheis.

First steps:

 ·         We propose that a tick box be included on the motor tax renewal form, and new and renewal forms for driving licences.

·         In the UK they use the NHS number to identify individuals who wish to donate. We have no equivalent in Ireland and, on consultation with the Irish Kidney Association,  we believe that the PPS number is a suitable alternative.

·         The UK currently have donor registry system which requires individuals to tick a box on their motor tax renewal form. This information is stored in a database which is accessible by hospitals nationwide. This system is simple and effective and is the first step in establishing a working database in Ireland.

·         With the Human Body Organs and Human Tissue Bill in its initial stages, it is an ideal time to get a head start on building this database.

·         With the support of the major organ donation organisation we would hope to make the culture of organ donation a national culture ie. a tick box would be on student id, passports bank cards credit cards etc

Senator Mark Daly’s campaign to get an opt-in to organ donation tick box on motor tax and driving license forms, has inspired Brendan Hayes and others of Ógra Fianna Fáil, to campaign for an organ donation tick box  on student cards in all the major universities.
