Deputy Spokesperson on Lifelong learning & School Transport Print E-mail

The OECD explains the term ‘lifelong learning’ as a range of educational processes which adults engage in. For example, these may include ‘both formal and informal learning, work-related education and training for the employed, language and citizenship courses for immigrants, labour market training programmes for job seekers, and learning for personal development’.

Lifelong learning has only very recently (1997) become part of formal Government policy with the first Minister for State being appointed with responsibility for the sector.  As the jobs market becomes ever more competitive, specialized and technology and skills driven, this area is destined to become increasingly important, as the workforce is required to adapt and re-skill in response.

My priorities for this area include researching the most practical ways financial support can be given to mature students, assessing non-monetary methods of support to encourage people back into education and supporting employer’s initiatives to educate and train their existing staff.
I am working with the University Senators to get Dublin Institute of Technology access to an Electronic Library that their students are currently being denied access from.

My main concern for the School Transport brief is the continuing rising cost of fuel prices and the effect that it will have on this essential service.
