Since becoming a Member of the Seanad I have been taking Irish classes on a Wednesday morning in Teach Laighean. I was pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to pick up the cupla focail and get back into using Gaeilge. My objective for this issue is to do what I can to make the cupla focail of Gaeilge a normal part of our everyday language. Simple steps such as mobile phone providers offering their voicemail services or offices using Irish sign offs in their letters would go along way to standardising the use of Gaeilge in our day to day tongue. Pictured above is a man who shares this view, Des Bishop, who I invited to speak to staff and Members of the Houses of the Oireachtas about using more Gaeilge. Following on from his successful Irish language TV show Des is now sending out a very positive message encouraging Irish people to speak our native language without fear or apprehension.
