This video is a very real reminder of our fortunate place in society. I am deeply honoured to be assigned the portfolio of Overseas Development. The nature of overseas aid has changed dramatically in recent years in terms of what its goals are, the form it takes and how it’s channelled. The result has been a move towards creating a culture of independence, as opposed to a culture of dependence, as was often the case with overseas aid in the past. Ireland’s direct long-term development programs in partner countries are an example of how we provide countries with the infrastructure, tools and expertise to enable them to progress rather than just provide charity. This strategy creates sustainable improvements in the lives of ordinary people through building systems to address the causes of poverty rather than simply ameliorating the symptoms. Since my election, through meeting with representatives of NGOs, aid volunteers and trips to areas where Irish funded agencies are active, I have furthered my understanding of the numerous forms and means by which relief and assistance can be offered; whether it be through financial aid; volunteering of one’s time, provision of education and expertise or through promoting awareness of specific causes in developing countries.
It has my strengthened belief that if government is successful in mobilizing and tapping the latent energy, goodwill and talents of ordinary citizens who have much to offer, then much can be accomplished. In other words, the power of ordinary people to have an extraordinary impact on the lives of others because in the words of Martin Luther King - “Everyone can be great because everyone can serve” Therefore my top priority is to expand Irish people’s interest in overseas aid and it is my goal to use my position in urging the Government to encourage, facilitate and support the efforts of Irish citizens volunteering their time to worthwhile causes.
