Date Needed for Building of Kenmare Hospital Print E-mail

UPDATE April 2010: Since my last up date on the hospital I had discussions with John Browner of HSE Estates in Dublin in relation to the Kenmare Community Hospital. There will be 4 design and build teams asked to submit proposals for the project. Up until recently there were 5 companies who had expressed interest in tendering for the contracts however one of the companies has withdrawn. The 4 companies are:

BAM Construction,JJ Rhatigans,

Glenbeigh Construction

Western Building Ltd

Mr. Browner expects the design and tender documents to be ready by the end of May. The preferred bidders will be given an 8 week period within which to submit their completed tenders. As part of the process the companies will be asked to submit their design proposals and costings will be given to the HSE. The HSE project management team will then evaluate and assess the proposals. As part of the process there will be a tender clarification meeting where the design and build teams will be asked various questions on their proposals by the HSE. Please feel free to contact me if you require any further information.

UPDATE April 2010: I met with Minister for Health, Mary Harney TD, on Thursday 15th April to discuss the progress on Kenmare Hospital. The project team at Kerry HSE have completed the design brief for the hospital.  This information has been sent to the HSE estates section in Dublin led by John Brown. Over the next 4 weeks they will review the design brief and add the necessary tender and legal elements. The tender documents and design brief will be sent to the preferred design and build companies who will then have to make a presentation to the Kerry HSE project team. A recommendation as to who should be awarded the contract will be made by the project team.

The HSE are hopeful that the sign off on the contract will take place in June/July.After meeting a number of farmers in the area who are interested in supplying the new hospital with renewable energy products, I asked the project team to include in the brief that the design in the new hospital will include renewable resources as part of the contract. This has been done and I hope that with further meeting with the successful bidder that we will be able to arrive at a situation whereby the fuel to heat the hospital will be supplied locally, resulting in jobs and money being kept in the area.

UPDATE February 2010: In ongoing discussions with Michael Fitzgerald, head of the HSE in Kerry, he has stated that he intends to have a HSE project team in place by March to oversee the Kenmare hospital development. He also intends to have the design brief completed by the end of March. This brief will list the accommodation, standard of build and requirements for the new hospital. Once completed the brief will be given to the Design and Build teams of which there are 5 preferred ones on the HSE list . At the build stage many local contractors will have an opportunity to obtain sub-contracting work on this multi million euro project

2009: No date can be given for when the building of Kenmare hospital will commence according to the HSE. It is included in the capital programme 2009 to 2013. This is of little comfort however, as it has been included in previous capital programmes and has been promised for decades.  Locals have been campaigning for many years for a 14 bed extension to the hospital. But the HSE now say a new hospital, built on the existing site, is the most cost effective way of providing community medical services for the Kenmare area. What is required now is a campaign by the people of the area to ensure that a start date is given and contracts are signed.
